Watch this video tutorial to learn how to improvise in Dorian mode! What’s Dorian mode? First of all, modes are different scales, or different combinations of half steps and whole steps. The 2 most common modes are Major (aka “Ionian”) and Minor (aka “Aeolian”) . But there are several other modes as well. One of my favorite sounds is Dorian. The easiest way to play in Dorian is to play all white keys, but center around D.

Playing all white keys centered around C is Major or Ionian. Playing all white keys centered around A is Minor or Aeolian. Experiement with these, too!
